In our library, we have many different types of sport books:

We have biographies on famous athletes in our 921 section.
         

We have books about different sports and highlights in our 796 section.
         


We  have fiction chapter books about sports.
           

We also have picture books about sports.
         

This week highlighted a little of each section.  The Two books we read to the Students were:


K-2 Grades: Dino Football by Lisa Wheeler  - In this book Plant-eating dinosaurs (the Greenblade Snackers) face meat-eating dinosaurs (the Redscales) in a football game at the Lava Dome on Mega Bowl Sunday. Who will win?  


  3-5 Grades: Million Dollar Kick by Dan Gutman - Thirteen-year-old Whisper, who hates sports, is torn when she gets a chance to win a million dollars by kicking a goal against a local soccer hero.   Does she actually go through with the Kick?  Does she win one million dollars?

Princes and Princesses of Bella Vista

Hear ye, hear ye! All Princes and Princesses of Bella Vista  It is decreed that the royal guards have opened the gates to permit books to be read to honor the highnesses of Bella Vista at the daily jubilee gatherings of class visits during September 9 - 13, 2013.  The queens of the library media castle honor the future leaders of the kingdom by reading these books:

Rules

This week in the library we introduced the rules of the library to the students.  Our Bella Vista library rules are:
        1- Whisper
        2- Respect others
        3- Use a shelf marker
        4- Put unshelved books in the "White Zone"
        5- Push in chairs
        6- Store books in a special place at home
        7- Return or renew books after two weeks

We are fortunate to have fantastic students here at Bella Vista who are already great at following the Library rules.  

We also introduced two books about rules to the students.

For grades K-2 We read Skippyjon Jones.  In this book Skippyjon Jones,  a little kitten with a big imagination, is sent to his room to contemplate what it means to be a cat, but instead embarks on an imaginary adventure in which his Zorro-like alter ego, El Skippito, rescues a group of chihuahuas from a bean-eating bumblebee. His mother gives him a rule to stay out of his closet.  What happens Skippyjon Jones disobeys his mother?

For grades 3-5, We read Rules by Cynthia Lord.  Rules is about a 12 girl, Catherine, who has a younger brother with Autism.  Catherine has taught her brother rules to head off his embarrassing behavior. Some of the rules she has taught him are:
          - Chew with your mouth closed.
          - Say "thank you" when someone gives you a present (even
               if you don't like it).
          - If the bathroom door is closed, knock (especially
               if Catherine has a friend over)!
          - No toys in the fish tank.
This is also a great book about finding acceptance, and finding friendship in unusual places.

The first day of school is an exciting and nervous time. Students may see old friends, meet new friends, be in a new classroom, meet a new teacher and, if you are lucky, you will get a chance to meet the new principal at Bella Vista Elementary, Mr. Prescott!

Mrs. Allison and Mrs. Coombs are here again this year in the Library Media Center to help students grow in their enjoyment of reading amazing books and visiting libraries.

Bella Vista's Beehive Book Club Beach Party 2013

    Welcome to Bella Vista's Beehive Book Club Beach Party!
  A big thank you goes out to our students for participating in the Beehive Book Club this year.
 Over 920 student votes were submitted to CLAU's Beehive Book Competition and around
2,000 Beehive Nominees were read by students this year!

And The Beehive Award Winners Are...

All students were invited to attend the  Beehive Book Club Beach Party during class visits, May 20-24, 2013.  Invitations were sent home with students a week before, the principal and teachers were notified and signs were posted on the windows of the library.

All the students who read one or more Beehive Nominees for 2012-13 received a colorful, plastic lei.  Over 400 leis were handed out throughout the week. These students were also eligible for the drawing to win a Beehive Award winning book in each class.  The more Beehive Nominees for 2012-13 a student read the more times their name went into the drawing so they had a better chance of winning.                                                                                                     

The Book Worm Estimate is a favorite party activity of the students, even though the chance of winning is one out of the entire student- body! The students write down their guess of the number of sour gummy worms in a jar and the student who guesses correctly, wins the jar of gummy worms!

The top reader of Beehive books in each class received a certificate signed by the Principal and 

Media Assistants and some fun prizes.  

At the Beehive Book Club Beach Party, all the Beehive Nominees were shown to the students.  They raised their hands when they liked a book shown. The winning books the students helped win with their votes were announced for Bella Vista and for the Beehive Award.  Better Together and The Unwanteds won at Bella Vista, Won Ton and LuLu and The Brontosaurus won the Beehive Awards. And Press Here and Pop! The Invention of Bubble Gum won at Bella Vista and received the Utah Beehive Awards.

As members of the book club, all students received a cup of colorful Goldfish crackers at Check Out Time.

~ The Special Awards Announced Over the PA During Morning Announcements ~

Special awards were presented to the top readers of Beehive books in Kindergarten - Third Grade (the winning student read 30 of the Beehive Nominees) and in the Fourth - Sixth Grade (there was a tie between two friends who both read 39 of the Beehive Nominees).  And for the top reader of Beehive books for 2012-13 for the entire school.  This year we had a tie. Way to go students!

PIZZA PARTIES were awarded to the classes who read the most Beehive Nominees.  
The Two Top Classes were in Two Categories:
 One class from Kindergarten -Third Grade and one from Fourth - Sixth Grade

Congratulations Mrs. Pendley's and Mrs. Hawkin's Classes!

FYI, HOW IT BEGAN THIS YEAR: The Kick-Off for our third annual Beehive Book Club was during class visits in the Fall. All the Beehive Nominated books were introduced, rules of the book club were explained as well as the announcement that rewards would be given during a beach party at the end of the year to students who read the Beehives and followed the rules of the club.  Each year we have a different theme.  This year our theme was "Catch a Wave of Adventure, Read Beehive Books."  Each student became a member at the Kick Off by coloring a paper surfboard and stapling a paper die cut boy or girl surfer to the surfboard. The surfers were then attached to paper waves that surrounded the walls in the hallways outside of the library with our theme.  For more details, contact Mrs. Allison or Mrs. Coombs.

National Library Week: Andrew, Arthur and a Ghost!

4th - 6th Grade
Andrew Carnegie, The Builder of Libraries by Charnan Simon
Andrew Carnegie was the founder of public libraries. His life is a fascinating rags to riches story.  He was born in Scotland and his home is now a historical site.  In Scotland, his father
provided for the family by making linen with a hand loom. The Industrial Revolution was beginning and machines made his work obsolete.  He moved his family to America hoping for new opportunities for work but found no need for his sklll.  At the age of 12, Andrew stopped going to school and helped provide for his family, making only $1.20 a week.  Andrew was smart and a hard worker. He rubbed shoulders (networked) with the right people and worked in the telegraph business and was promoted quickly.  By his mid twenties he had purchased a home, quit his job and began making investments that made him extremely wealthy. He was alive at the time Abraham Lincoln was president, during the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, telegraph communication and when the transcontinental railroad joined together at Promontory Point, Utah.

Andrew Carnegie believed rich people should share their wealth.  He became a philanthropist giving away millions of dollars to worthy causes, including starting public libraries.  The idea came from memories of his childhood when he was invited to a wealthy man's home to read books with other working boys.  This wonderful recollection motivated him to make books and libraries available to everyone, not just the wealthy.  He donated over 2,000 public libraries to be built in America and other countries as long as the community promised to keep the libraries stocked with books.  Some of the Carnegie Libraries still exist today.

2nd and 3rd Grade

Arthur and Francine are not getting along but their third grade teacher, Mr. Ratburn assigns them to be partners on a report about heroes.  They go to the library to do research for their report in separate places in the library.  Arthur accidentally falls asleep.  When he wakes up he discovers the library is closed and he is locked in the library!
